Why Does Sourav Ganguly Believes Shreyas Iyer Deserves A Place In The Indian Test Team?

Why Sourav Ganguly Believes Shreyas Iyer Deserves Test 2025

Indian legend Sourav Ganguly has given his opinion about the Indian team for the Test series against England, as two of the precious gems of the Indian team are missing former captains like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Looking at the good and successful performance of Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer in the last one year, Sourav Ganguly believes that Shreyas Iyer should return to the Test setup.

Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly described Shreyas Iyer as a strong player for 2024. Considering Test cricket as a different matter, Sourav Ganguly felt that it was important to include Shreyas Iyer in the Indian team, so that it can be seen what contribution this brilliant batsman can make to the team.

Why does Sourav Ganguly believes that Shreyas Iyer should get a place?

“Shreyas Iyer has been performing at his best since last year and he should have been in the recent Indian team. Last year has been great for Shreyas Iyer. Shreyas Iyer is not a player who is dropped from the Indian team. Although Test cricket is a different matter, I still wanted to include him in this England series to see what he can contribute to the team,”  Sourav Ganguly said in the interview

Shreyas Iyer has played brilliantly in the last year. After Shreyas Iyer was dropped from the BCCI central contract for the 2024-25 season, he later captained the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 and led his team to great victories. He also led Mumbai to great victories in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Ranji Trophy and Irani Trophy.

In the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Shreyas Iyer also played a valuable role in the Indian team’s title-winning campaign from the middle order. He was bought by Punjab Kings for Rs 26.75 crore in the recently concluded IPL 2025, the second-highest amount in IPL history. He then captained PBKS to their maiden final and also had a stellar season as a batsman, scoring a total of over 600 runs at a strike rate of over 170 in IPL 2025.
